The world of Welcome to Wrexham is coming back to television. Apple TV+ has announced that Necaxa, the upcoming spinoff centered around Liga MX’s Club of the same name, will be available for streaming as a part of their catalog on August 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on FXX. Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds recently purchased a minority stake in the team. The deal turned the production of the upcoming spinoff into a reality, after the original series launched its first four seasons.
While Welcome to Wrexham follows the trajectory of the popular Welsh team, Necaxa will bring the culture that comes with Mexican soccer to the documentary format used by the original series. The spinoff will premiere just a few months after the fourth installment of the original series made its way to television. It remains to be seen if FX will turn Necaxa into a successful franchise. If what the network has done with Welcome to Wrexham is anything to go by, audiences might be in for a treat with this year’s spinoff.
FX has already established a release schedule for Necaxa. The first two episodes of the series will premiere on August 7, with two episodes coming out every Thursday until August 21. After that, one episode will be released every week, until the first season of the show comes to an end on September 18. The last episode of the series will be released during the week of Mexico’s Independence Day. Eva Longoria will be involved with the Necaxa soccer club during upcoming episodes of the spinoff.
The Creative Minds Behind ‘Necaxa’
The people who turned Welcome to Wrexham into a massive hit have been working on the development of Necaxa for a while. Ryan Reynolds continues to expand his work on sports documentary television after recently returning as Wade Wilson in Deadpool & Wolverine, the Marvel Cinematic Universe blockbuster that made over $1 billion at the global box office last year. The acclaimed actor will also be seen in next year’s Animal Friends. Next summer’s adventure will also feature Jason Momoa and Vince Vaughn.
One factor that will change the game for Necaxa is the inclusion of Eva Longoria into the mix. The talented performer will do everything she can to lead the soccer club towards success after starring as Val Garcia in Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Trip. Will changing the trajectory of a soccer club’s history be easier than bringing back Judith Viorst‘s work for a new generation of fans? Audiences are about to find out, with Necaxa finally premiering later this summer.
Necaxa will premiere on FXX on Aug. 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
