Of all the book-to-screen adaptations that have popped out of the woodwork over the last few years, this might be the one we’re most excited about. Jennette McCurdy’s bestselling memoir, I’m Glad My Mom Died, has everything we want. An inside look at what was going on for a young child star on the set of a Nickelodeon show? Check. Some insane family drama? Check. A primary character who you can root for in the way that you find yourself crying, cheering her on, and fully investing yourself in her story? Check, check, check. Cranking it up to an 11, Apple TV+ challenged themselves to go even further with the project when the studio took it under its wings to transfer it from page to screen, as Deadline has announced that Jennifer Aniston will step in to star and executive produce.
The story is an incredibly harrowing one, as McCurdy pulls back the curtain and invites readers (and soon, audiences) to find out the truth about what was happening while she was riding the waves of fame as a child star on Nickelodeon’s iCarly. For six seasons, McCurdy appeared alongside Miranda Cosgrove and Jerry Trainor on one of the network’s most popular teen-centered shows. The book chronicles her experience on the series, some of her alleged experiences with higher-ups in the company, and — as the title would suggest — her tumultuous, upsetting, and downright abusive relationship with her mother. As a reader, you’ll shed just as many tears as you will chuckles, as McCurdy answers her trauma with well-timed and comedic observations. Set for a 10-episode run, Apple Studios’ take on I’m Glad My Mom Died is penned, showrun, and executive produced by McCurdy and Ari Katcher (Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show).
What Else Is Jennifer Aniston Up To?
For those at home panicking about the implications that I’m Glad My Mom Died creates for Aniston’s other Apple TV+ series, The Morning Show, have no fear. The title is still on track for its Season 4 premiere on September 17 and, according to Deadline, the Friends alum’s work on the new title likely won’t affect the other. At the same time, it’s unclear whether The Morning Show, in which Aniston stars as well as executive produces alongside Reese Witherspoon, will receive a greenlight for a fifth season from the network.
As of right now, no further casting announcements have been revealed, but stay tuned to Collider for any and all updates surrounding Apple TV+’s take on I’m Glad My Mom Died.
