Diaz pays tribute to Jota as Bayern win Supercup

Luis Diaz paid tribute to Diogo Jota after scoring his first Bayern Munich goal to help them to a 2-1 win over Stuttgart in the DFL-Supercup.

Bayern added to their trophy cabinet with victory at the home of the DFB-Pokal winners, the Bundesliga champions taking the lead through Harry Kane in the 18th minute before Diaz opened his account for the club 13 minutes from the end of normal time.

Kane fired into the bottom-left corner after Stuttgart failed to clear a ball forward from Michael Olise.

Diaz headed home from close range from Serge Gantry’s lofted ball from the right, and honoured the memory of Jota by copying his former Liverpool team-mate’s celebration. Jota and his brother Andre Silva were killed in a car crash in Spain last month.

Stuttgart pulled one back late on through Jamie Leweling, but his 93rd-minute effort was in vain.

Dier on target on Monaco debut

Eric Dier helped Bayern to the Bundesliga title last season, and the former Tottenham defender marked his debut for Monaco in style after joining the Ligue 1 club on a free transfer.

Dier headed in Monaco’s second in a 3-1 win over Le Havre after they had taken the lead through a Gautier Lloris own goal.

After Rassoul Ndiaye pulled one back for Le Havre, Maghnes Akilouche made sure of the points for Monaco in the 74th minute, tapping in after great work from Dennis Zakaria.

Elsewhere in Ligue 1, financially troubled Lyon started with a victory as Georges Mikautadze scored in first-half stoppage time to secure a 1-0 win at Lens.

    Kubo earns point for Sociedad

Most of the drama in LaLiga on Saturday came as Mallorca had two players sent off and Ferran Torres scored a controversial goal in Barcelona’s opening 3-0 win.

But the last club other than Barca or the two Madrid sides to win LaLiga was also in action, as Valencia hosted Real Sociedad at the Mestalla.

Diego Lopez gave Valencia the lead in the 57th minute, prodding home from Dani Raba’s clever ball over the top.

But Takefusa Kubo earned a point for Sociedad as he equalised three minutes later, finding the bottom-right corner with a superb strike from the edge of the area.

The other game in LaLiga saw Alaves beat newly promoted Levante 2-1.
