Superstar Rajinikanth‘s latest action entertainer, Coolie, has set the Indian Box Office on fire, delivering a phenomenal performance in its extended four-day opening weekend. The film amassed a staggering approximate gross of Rs. 227.25 crore across the country, firmly establishing itself as a commercial powerhouse and rewriting the record books for Kollywood. The massive opening was fueled by the star’s immense drawing power and a long holiday weekend.
A Record-Breaking Weekend Performance
The four-day total makes Coolie the second-highest weekend grosser in the history of Tamil cinema, trailing only the behemoth 2.0 (Rs. 262 crore) and comfortably surpassing recent blockbusters like Leo (Rs. 213.50 crore). The film kicked off its run with a thunderous Rs. 75.50 crore on Thursday, followed by strong holds of Rs. 63.25 crore on Friday and Rs. 47.00 crore on Saturday. It wrapped up its opening weekend with another Rs. 41.50 crore on Sunday. Coolie is one of only three Kollywood films to have ever crossed the Rs. 200 crore mark in its first four days.
Dissecting The Regional Breakdown
As expected, Tamil Nadu led the charge, contributing a massive Rs. 96 crore to the total haul. This marks the biggest four-day opening weekend for a Rajinikanth film in his home state, outperforming his previous best, Jailer (Rs. 77 crore). The film also posted strong numbers in other regions, with the Telugu states bringing in Rs. 51.50 crore, Karnataka grossing Rs. 30.50 crore, and Kerala adding Rs. 21.25 crore. The rest of India contributed another Rs. 28 crore, showcasing the film’s wide-reaching appeal.
Mixed Trends Emerge Despite Huge Numbers
Despite the gigantic opening figures, the film’s collection trend indicates some underlying issues. After a spectacular start, the numbers saw sharp declines in several key markets. The Telugu states, for instance, saw Sunday’s collections drop to less than half of the opening day’s figures. Kerala, in particular, experienced a significant crash in collections after the first day. While the holiday support and initial hype have propelled the film to a massive total, its performance on Monday will be crucial in determining its long-term trajectory and whether it can sustain its momentum to challenge the lifetime totals of films like Leo and Jailer.
