Late penalty gives hosts big win

Leeds United edged a tight and tense Premier League opener against Everton as Lukas Nmecha came off the bench to slam in a decisive penalty.

After Sunderland beat West Ham on Saturday, United made it two wins for the newly-promoted sides when former Manchester City forward Nmecha kept his cool in a cauldron of Elland Road noise to beat Jordan Pickford from 12 yards.

Everton, who kept new signing Jack Grealish on the bench until the last 20 minutes, were tepid at best in the first half but warmed up and were on top before the goal.

Referee Chris Kavanagh pointed to the spot when James Tarkowsksi blocked a shot by Anton Stach with his arm – which was tucked in by his side.

David Moyes will now call for more reinforcements after seeing a makeshift side struggle at times.

Midfielder James Garner had to fill-in at left-back and Everton did not have a shot until 10 minutes into the second half when Idrissa Gueye slammed over the top.

They then settled and looked bright, with good play from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall freeing Charly Alcaraz for a low shot well saved by debutant keeper Lucas Perri.

Toffees defender Jake O’Brien and Leeds midfielder Ao Tanaka both shot over and the game looked set to end goalless until Nmecha’s vital contribution – winning the game with his third touch of the ball.
