Alonso says Rodrygo absence against Osasuna was tactical amid departure speculation

Manager Xabi Alonso explained that Rodrygo’s absence in Real Madrid’s opening La Liga game of the season was a tactical decision amid uncertainty over the forward’s future at Los Blancos.

The 24-year-old Brazilian was an unused substitute as Real ran out narrow but comfortable 1-0 winners against Osasuna at the Bernabeu.

Kylian Mbappe grabbed the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in a match that saw domestic debuts for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, Alvaro Carreras and teenager Franco Mastantuono.

Rodrygo’s game time at this summer’s Club World Cup was limited, while he played just 29 minutes off the bench in Real’s pre-season friendly against WSG Tirol, prompting growing speculation that his future may lie elsewhere, with Manchester City reportedly interested.

Alonso, however, insisted his decision to leave Rodrygo on the bench against Osasuna was purely tactically motivated.

“Nothing is happening,” Alonso said after the match.

“I count on Rodrygo of course, it’s just a game. This was my decision.”

The new Madrid boss went on to stress that no player in his squad is guaranteed a place in the starting 11 and, when asked about the performance of Mbappe, admitted last season’s La Liga top scorer could still improve.

“He [Mbappe] wants more after last season. He knows he can do better,” said Alonso.

“After his first year, I think he aspires for more. I don’t know if it’s because of the number or his ambition We feel he aims to deliver a better individual performance and inspire those around him. His desire is evident every day”

Next up for Real Madrid is a trip to newly-promoted Oviedo, who were beaten 2-0 by Villarreal in their opening league game.
