Arteta tight-lipped on Eze deal ahead of Leeds clash

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has refused to talk about the imminent arrival of Eberechi Eze ahead of the weekend match against Leeds.

The Gunners swooped in at the last moment to pip rivals Tottenham to the signing, with Eze sitting out of Crystal Palace’s Europa Conference League clash on Thursday night.

But in his pre-match press conference, he did not much have much to say on the signing and instead pivoted to the fitness of Kai Havertz.

He said: “Nothing to comment. I can never talk about any player that is not part of our group yet.”

“We don’t really know the extent of it [Havertz injury]. We need a bit more time and some more tests and after that we will have some more clarity.

“I prefer not to talk about the specifics but he is not fit. We need to explore this situation a bit further and decide what we are going to do.

“I don’t know [how long he will be out for]. I would love to have him available for tomorrow.”

“The stronger the feeling, the better”

    Gyokeres update

Arteta was also quizzed on new striker Viktor Gyokeres, who only lasted 60 minutes in the win against Manchester United.

He added: “It was dependent on how the game developed and every game brings different challenges and opportunities.

“I think the game was very demanding physically, it became really open for different reasons and at that time we decided he did enough and we had Kai [Havertz] on the bench to come on and change the game.”

“He is very enthusiastic. He has trained really well this week again. He has had another week under his belt and he is in a really good place.”
