Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana is one of the most highly anticipated films in Indian cinema, with its ambitious vision, star cast, and scale making it a project unlike any other. Featuring Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as Ravana, the magnum opus is being produced by Namit Malhotra, Yash, and Hollywood producer Charles Roven. The film is expected to release in two parts, with the first installment planned for Diwali 2026. Mounted on a reported budget exceeding ₹1,600 crore, it combines state-of-the-art VFX technology with extensive research involving Sanskrit scholars to stay true to the spirit of Valmiki’s epic.
Amitabh Bachchan’s Dual Involvement
According to recent reports, the makers are now exploring the possibility of Amitabh Bachchan not only voicing the character of Jatayu but also serving as the sutradhar of the film. An insider told the publication, “We’re exploring the idea of having Bachchan as the sutradhar. His voice adds gravitas that no one else can match. The makers are keen that the film opens with his voice. It’s still at the discussion stage.”
Bachchan’s voice is already tied to Jatayu, the noble vulture who sacrifices his life trying to save Sita. The character has been designed with advanced VFX, with reports suggesting that Bachchan’s eyes were scanned to digitally create Jatayu’s soulful gaze. The possibility of him narrating the film in addition to voicing Jatayu raises concerns of overlap, but as the insider noted, “While the clash is a concern, there will be ways to work it out on a creative level. Having him open the film and be the spiritual narrator will have a strong impact.”
Ramayana: Production Scale and Industry Buzz
The film’s technical approach has impressed many within the industry. Actress Indira Krishnan, who plays Kaushalya, revealed earlier that scenes were filmed using 86 cameras and advanced VFX technology previously employed in Interstellar. She said, “I remember when I went in for my body measurements, they told me the machine was used for (Christopher Nolan’s) Interstellar. It was an 86 camera setup. All 86 cameras flashed on me at once – I was zonked.” This advanced rig is being used to capture intricate visual data for VFX, helping create hyper-realistic characters and environments.
