The Drishyam franchise, led by the legendary Mohanlal, is arguably one of India’s most brilliant thriller series. The story of Georgekutty and his family has kept audiences on the edge of their seats for two films, and the anticipation for Drishyam 3 is immense. However, in a surprising twist, both the film’s director and one of its lead actresses have suggested that the third installment might not be the thriller everyone is expecting.
Adding to the excitement, director Jeethu Joseph has also spoken about the future of the franchise, addressing the possibility of a Drishyam 4.
A ‘Pakka Family Entertainer,’ Not A Thriller?
In recent interviews, both the makers and the cast have described Drishyam 3 in unexpected terms. Actress Ansiba Hassan, who plays Georgekutty’s daughter Anju, stated, “It is a film for the pakka family audience… Drishyam 3 will be a pakka family entertainer.” Director Jeethu Joseph himself echoed this sentiment, remarking that he doesn’t believe Drishyam 3 is a thriller.
While this has raised some eyebrows, savvy fans of the franchise are taking these statements with a grain of salt. Before the release of Drishyam 2, the director had similarly described it as a film focusing more on the family’s emotional journey, yet it turned out to be another masterclass in suspense. Many believe this could be a clever strategy to keep the real plot a complete secret.
The Big Question: Will There Be A Drishyam 4?
Even before the third film starts shooting, talk about a fourth part has already begun. When asked about Drishyam 4, Jeethu Joseph gave a thoughtful answer about his creative process. He explained, “I don’t know if there will be a fourth part. If you ask whether there are possibilities to go from third to fourth, there could be. But I have not spotted those.”
He clarified that he only moves forward with a sequel when a truly worthy idea comes to him, much like how the concept for Drishyam 3 only became clear after he had finished the second film. This suggests that while the door is open for Drishyam 4, it will only happen if the story demands it.
What We Know So Far
While the genre might be a topic of debate, the core team is firmly in place. Mohanlal will return as Georgekutty, along with Meena, Ansiba Hassan, and Esther Anil as his family. The much-awaited film is scheduled to begin shooting in October 2025. Until then, fans will be left to wonder whether Georgekutty’s next chapter is a family drama or another clever cat-and-mouse thriller.
