Wolves scored twice inside the final eight minutes to earn their first win of the 2025/26 season and beat West Ham at home in the EFL Cup in one of two all-Premier League tie on the first night of the second round.

Brentford claimed consecutive victories, following up their home defeat of Aston Villa in the top flight on Saturday by winning at Bournemouth.

League Two side Cambridge United produced the greatest shock, winning 3-1 against Championship visitors Charlton Athletic.

101GreatGoals.com has the latest results and scores from the 2025/26 EFL Cup second round, including details of when the third round draw is.

Wolves vs West Ham: Relief for hosts

No West Ham fan will need reminding that their league season has started with a 3-0 defeat at Sunderland and 5-1 thrashing at home by Chelsea, and their problems continued when Rodrigo Gomes fired in the rebound in the 43rd minute to give Wolves the lead at Molineux after Hwang Hee-chan’s penalty hit a post.

Two headers turned the scoreline around within 18 minutes of the restart, Tomas Soucek meeting Kyle Walker-Peters’ cross and Lucas Paqueta pouncing from Jarrod Bowen’s delivery.

With West Ham closing in on a result to reduce the pressure on manager Graham Potter, Jorgen Strand Larsen – the subject of a £50 million bid from Newcastle on Monday – struck from inside the box in the 82nd minute and headed in Jackson Tchatchoua’s cross two minutes later to make the result 3-2.

Wolves have lost 4-0 at home to Manchester City and 1-0 at Bournemouth in the league.

    Bournemouth vs Brentford: Bees through

Brentford have scored four goals without reply since conceding three during the first half of their 3-1 defeat at Nottingham Forest on the opening day.

The unmarked Fabio Carvalho struck their opener in the 34th minute at Bournemouth after the Cherries failed to deal with Kristoffer Ajer’s header, and substitute Igor Thiago scored his second goal in three games to finish off a counter-attack 31 minutes later for the forward’s second goal in three games.

Ajer’s late clearance off the line maintained Brentford’s clean sheet as Keith Andrews won his first cup tie as a manager 2-0.

EFL Cup results: Leeds, Sunderland shocks

Leeds and Sunderland became the first Premier League clubs to exit against teams from lower divisions in this season’s competition.

Karl Darlow’s second-half own goal put beleaguered Championship hosts Sheffield Wednesday in front against the Whites, who equalised through Jayden Bogle but went out 3-0 in the shootout at Hillsborough, where home fans stayed away in protest at the club’s owners.

Chelsea loanee Leo Castledine’s volley gave League One team Huddersfield Town a ninth-minute advantage at the Stadium of Light, where another Blues player, Marc Guiu, equalised for Sunderland six minutes from time before The Terriers prevailed 6-5 in a shootout.

Do the EFL Cup winners qualify for Europe?

The EFL Cup winners receive a place in the play-off stage of the UEFA Conference League unless they qualify through another route for European competition.

Newcastle were an example of the rule in action in 2024/25, instead qualifying for the Champions League through their league position.

That meant their Conference League play-off place went to the next-highest ranked team who had not qualified for European competition via their league position.

Do EFL Cup ties go to extra time, replays and penalties?

Should they finish level after 90 minutes, EFL Cup ties go straight to penalties until the semi-finals, which take place over two legs.

If the scoreline is level after the second leg, extra time and – if necessary – penalties are used to separate teams.

The final is a one-off match at Wembley Stadium, with extra time and penalties used if required.

Liverpool beat Chelsea 11-10 on penalties in the 2021/22 final and edged the same fixture after extra time in 2023/24 through Virgil van Dijk’s 118th-minute winner.

Newcastle beat Liverpool 2-1 in the 2024/25 final to win their first domestic trophy since 1955.
