War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji and starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani, hit theatres on 14 August 2025 as part of the YRF Spy Universe. Mounted on a massive budget and positioned as one of the year’s biggest event films, it was expected to open strong across India.
With a reported budget of ₹400 crore, it is among the most expensive Indian films ever made. Featuring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR in his Hindi debut, and Kiara Advani, expectations were sky-high, especially after massive pre‑release marketing and earlier blockbusters like War and Pathaan from Spy Universe.
In an epic box office clash, Rajinikanth’s Coolie and Hrithik Roshan’s War 2 were released together on August 14. Despite stiff competition, both films had superb openings and makers were hopeful that the Independence Day weekend would provide an extra surge to the films’ collection. But on weekdays, both films failed to meet expectations.

War 2 trended poorly over the weekend and Monday crash has sealed its fate. Film will be first out and out flop film of YRF’s Spy Universe. It raises question mark on subsequent films from universe specially the next one Alpha set to release on Christmas in December. This has incurred losses in tune of 40-50 crore for YRF in addition to massive loss in Telugu distribution.
