Mainz’s Paul Nebel has been hit with a two-match-ban following his red card in yesterday’s opening round Bundesliga loss to Köln. The 22-year-old hauled down Köln’s Jakub Kaminski at the hour mark, denying his opponent a clear goal scoring opportunity. The move will cost Nebel the chance to participate in upcoming league fixtures against VfL Wolfsburg and RB Leipzig.
Nebel’s suspension for “unsportsmanlike conduct” counts as the most severe disciplinary punishment handed down by the German FA following this weekend’s matches. Borussia Dortmund defender Filippo Mané also received a straight red, but will only have to sit out one match.
There’s been some talk of Bayern potentially appealing to the German FA to reverse Joshua Kimmich’s yellow card in the Friday night fixture against RB Leipzig, but so far nothing has happened. Bayern understandably find themselves preoccupied with other things.
Nebel remains eligible to help his team out in the second leg of Thursday night’s Conference League playoff against Norway’s Rosenborg Trondheim. Mainz unexpectedly lost the first leg of the playoff last Thursday night and must fight to keep their European dream alive.
