Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has issued a cautionary message to Ruben Amorim after the club’s frustrating 1-1 draw with Fulham on Sunday.

United headed to Craven Cottage with a lot of optimism, following their encouraging display in the 1-0 defeat to Arsenal the previous weekend.
Despite losing, there was plenty to like about United’s performance and confidence in the camp was high that a positive result against Fulham would follow.
The Red Devils started well, fashioning multiple clear-cut chances and dominating possession but they could not capitalise, which allowed the hosts to slowly get back into the game. Fulham eventually took control and looked the much better side.
However, against the run of play, United took the lead in the 58th minute as Leny Yoro’s header was deflected in by Rodrigo Muniz. It appeared United were headed for their first three points of the 2025/26 Premier League season but it was not to be, as they were pegged back just 58 minutes later. An unmarked Emile Smith Rowe was allowed to make a darting run at the near post before he poked the ball past the reach of Altay Bayindir.
After the final whistle, Amorim blamed the result on United’s poor game management, insisting his players were more concerned about maintaining the score line rather than pushing the opponent and going for the kill.
But, doubts over Amorim have begun resurfacing among sections of the fanbase, and Rooney has stressed that the Portuguese coach has nowhere to hide and needs to deliver results soon.
Rooney sounds warning to Amorim
Rooney said on the Wayne Rooney show, “There are no excuses now for the manager this season. He’s got to start getting results and getting results quickly because once you start getting into October, November, if results don’t change drastically then that’s when pressure comes.”
“United really needed to hit the ground running this season and one point from six is a worry.”
“It’s only two games into the season but the worrying sign is we’re seeing things that we saw last season and that’s a concern.”
Asked whether Amorim is the right man for the job, Rooney answered, “It’s difficult to sit here and say, ‘yeah 100 per cent’ – I don’t think anyone could do that. I don’t think Ruben would probably say that himself with what we’ve seen since he’s been at the club.”
United’s record goalscorer continued, “I think the recruitment has been good in the summer – I still want to see two or three more players brought in. But it’s difficult (to say), ‘right, this is going to be our manager for the next five years’ on what we’ve seen.”

Amorim and his players are back in action on Wednesday when they face Grimsby Town in the second round of the EFL Cup.
