USMNT international Giovanni Reyna’s transfer to Borussia Mönchengladbach has been officially confirmed. The 22-year-old switches Bundesliga outfits, moving to Gladbach from Borussia Dortmund for a transfer fee of around €7m including potential bonuses. All major German football media outlets confirm the sum, as well as the fact that Dortmund have secured a 15 percent re-sale clause as part of the deal

Reyna’s departure from Dortmund was treated as a given throughout the summer. The American even voluntarily forfeited his No. 7 tricot to new BVB summer signing Jobe Bellingham. Reyna may stand a chance of filling the gap in Gladbach’s squad left by the departed Alassane Plea, but will have to work hard to displace the likes of Kevin Stöger, Robin Hack, and Franck Honorat in attack.

“We’ve shared a long history with Gio,” a statement released on Dortmund’s website read. “He enjoyed a meteoric rise at BVB at the start of his career, culminating in the 2021 DFB Pokal win. Unfortunately, his development has not progressed as we all hoped for in recent seasons. It is thus time for him to start a new chapter in his sporting career.“

“Gio is an experienced yet young player with enormous potential,” BMG sporting director Roland Virkus noted in his own club statement. “His profile will help us progress on the pitch. He knows the Bundesliga and can play in all attacking positions.”

“Borussia is a big club and a great club,” Reyna noted in his own statement. “I’m very happy that this transfer has worked out.“
