Union Berlin have confirmed a loan out for Bundesliga veteran Laszlo Benes. The 27-year-old Slovakian international will head to Turkish club Kayserispor for the season, at which he will work under former Bundesliga head coach Markus Gisdol. Benes played almost no role for Union in training camp and found himself unlikely to earn minutes on Steffen Baumgart’s team this season.

Benes joined Union from then 2. Bundesliga outfit on a €3m transfer last summer. At the time, Benes’ purchase counted as a major coup for Horst Heldt and the FCU administrative team. Die Eisernen were delighted to welcome the former Borussia Mönchengladbach and FC Augsburg professional and his 65 German top flight appearances to date.

It appeared as if Benes would have a future in the German first division early last season. He scored a quality equalizer against Mainz on the 2024/25 campaign’s opening matchday and added an assist in a matchday seven win over Holstein Kiel. The central midfielder nevertheless only earned three starts under Baumgart and former FCU head coach Bo Svensson last year.

Benes departs Union having added 23 top flight appearances and two more goals to his Bundesliga CV. The now 32-times-capped international may still have a future in German football as he remains under contract with his current club and also built up an impressive 2. Bundesliga career whilst playing for Hamburg and Kiel.
