Werder Bremen’s Deichstube fan site reports that there’s been a breakthrough in negotiations over a loan deal for Leeds right back Isaac Schmidt. The site goes so far to claim that the Swiss international is due at the Bundesliga club for a scheduled medical. Bremen have been trying to secure Schmidt on loan for several weeks now. Deichstube claims that Schmidt will join the Hanseaten on loan with a purchase option.

It should be noted that other sources are reporting differently. Florian Plettenberg insists that to no deal has been finalized yet. Plettenberg reiterates rumors that Bremen may be pursuing Eintracht Frankfurt’s Elias Baum instead. German tabloid Sport Bild also claims that Bremen are merely pushing for a decision amid ongoing negotiations with the Yorkshire club.

The Bremen front office continues to find itself under serious pressure to bring in more players after an opening round cup loss against Bielefeld led to captain Marco Friedl openly criticizing club management’s performance on the summer transfer market. Bremen were dealt a further blow at the fullback positions this weekend when it was revealed that Schmidt’s Leeds teammate Maximilian Wöber will miss weeks with an injury.

Wöber had beens serving as head coach Horst Steffen’s starting left back whilst Felix Agu switched right to take over for the injured Mitchell Weiser. Bremen have thus far made only two signings over the course of the entire summer transfer window, bringing in Wöber on loan and purchasing Belgian winger Samuel Mbangula.

Agu and another one of Bremen’s key players, Austrian attacker Romano Schmid, have both been linked with Premier League switches. Agu appears to wish to remain with his German club and Schmid exit links have died down for now. The current-state-of-affairs at Bremen could nevertheless lead to both players wanting to jump ship.
