Wisp announces debut album If Not Winter

Before she became Wisp, Natalie R. Lu uploaded a shoegaze track called “Your face” to TikTok and SoundCloud in 2023. The song went viral overnight, resulting in a deal with Interscope Records and a place within the shoegaze revival. Since then, she’s toured with Slowdive, unveiled new music at Coachella, and will release her long-awaited debut album, If Not Winter, on Aug. 1.

When we connected with Wisp last year, she told us that she was in the middle of making the record with Max Epstein of Photographic Memory, who worked on her Pandora EP. “I’m sticking to the ethereal, fairy tale-esque stuff [that] circulates around Greek mythology, the mermaids and the angels, and I really want to incorporate more mystical creatures into my music, which will be fun to experiment with,” she revealed. That’s felt on her latest singles, including the recently released “Save me now,” which “represents the desperation for attention, sometimes mistaken as love, when you are in a lonely and vulnerable place. It’s about being infatuated with the idea of a savior that blindly leads you to making sacrifices on your wellbeing.”

In the fall, Wisp will tour with System of a Down, Korn, Deftones, and Avenged Sevenfold. Then she’ll embark on her own headlining run, bringing along Dream, Ivory, aldn, Photographic Memory, and Temachii. See those dates, plus the visualizer for “Save me now,” below.
